About Us

The Outdoor Learning Center is an interpretive, hands-on educational facility

Our building houses an indoor learning space for students consisting of a presentation auditorium, a laboratory classroom, an educational live animal program, and nature trails. The trail system is located on a 15-acre wooded area on Rowlett Creek adjacent to Bob Woodruff Park. The land is maintained by the City of Plano through a cooperative agreement with the city's Parks and Recreation Department. Field-based trail lessons and indoor laboratory activities are provided by HSLC teaching staff and trained volunteers.

I hear y'all have animals?

Our Animals

Nearly all of the animals utilized for education at the HSLC are rehomed by their former owners, confiscated and placed at the Center by local animal service agencies, or are permanently housed at the Center with the permission of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Native animals held under our educational display permit have been deemed "unreleasable" (unable to survive in the wild) by an experienced wildlife rehabilitator and/or veterinary professional educated in that animal’s care.

The HSLC is an integral part of Plano ISD students' learning experience in science education, environmental education, and integrated learning activities.

Who We Serve

Presently, the HSLC sees students from 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade each week throughout the school year. As a part of Plano ISD’s elementary curriculum students explore life cycles, the needs of living things, metamorphosis, the interconnectedness of the environment, energy systems, and the practice of scientific investigation.

Our program also provides unique, enriching, and educational experiences for Plano ISD's K, 2nd grade, and high school students through curriculum based animal outreach programs and hands on volunteer learning opportunities.

FAQS

Can I come tour the HSLC?

The HSLC building is not open to the public, but the trail grounds and nature preserve around the building are freely accessible to visitors (and are considered part of the Oak Point/Bob Woodruff parks).

Trail maps may be found on the City of Plano website.

Do y'all accept volunteers?

You are able to apply to volunteer with us at the HSLC! While we have staff on site every day of the year for our animals, volunteer hours are not currently offered on weekends. Please review our volunteer interest page for more information.

Where is the HSLC?

The Holifield Science Learning Center is located at 3401 East Spring Creek Parkway in Plano, TX.

What are your hours?

Normal operating hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Do y'all accept wildlife for rehabilitation?

We do not generally accept wildlife for rehabilitation. Our curator, Ms. Caywood-Best, is permitted and will accept cottontail rabbits, orphaned squirrels, orphaned opossums, and injured turtles as her availability permits. Please utilize the website Animal Help Now (https://ahnow.org/) if you need help with an issue involving a wild animal.

Do y'all accept different species of "exotic pet"?

Yes, we will accept pets needing rehoming, but our space is limited. You may reach out to our Curator, Elisa Caywood-Best, if you are an owner looking to surrender your pet to our program. Certain species are more frequently in re-homed than others. Species we are regularly full for are domestic rabbits, turtles, and tortoises.
